Builders Hardware Celebrates 13th Annual Garifuna Settlement Day Event
November 14th, 2025 – Belmopan, Belize
Builders Hardware proudly hosted its 13th annual Garifuna Settlement Day celebration, welcoming more than 600+ students, teachers, customers, and community members for a vibrant day of culture, learning, and community togetherness.
The tradition began in 2012, inspired by one of the Director Shelly Usher. Reflecting on the origins of the celebration, she shared:
“I’ve always loved Paul Nabor’s music, and at the time, I really wanted to see him in concert. So, we decided to bring him to Belmopan and invite the schools and the entire community as well. That day we saw how much the children enjoyed it, how educational it was, and how beautifully they connected with the culture. After witnessing the excitement and joy from everyone, we knew we had to continue.”
That first event featured Paul Nabor and a Garifuna dance group who taught the students about music, movement, and heritage. What was meant to be a one-time experience turned into an annual cultural tradition.
Honoring Culture, History, and Community
Builders Hardware continues this celebration each year with a commitment to keeping Garifuna culture alive and fostering goodwill within the community. The event is coordinated in partnership with the National Garifuna Council, and it remains a recognized activity on their cultural calendar.
This year’s event featured:
- UARAU Group
- Wagierale Drummers and Dancers
- Josh Arana
- Mrs. Emily Martinez
Students engaged in lessons about Garifuna history, traditional food, drumming, dance, and even learned a few Garifuna words and phrases—a blend of education and excitement.
Highlights & Memorable Moments
One of the most unforgettable scenes of the day was watching children attempt punta and jankunu dancing, with surprising talent emerging from unexpected places.
Maya and Mestizo students performing punta and jankunu like pros is a beautiful proof that Belize is truly a melting pot of cultures.
The children’s laughter, the rhythmic drumming, and the energy under the tent created an atmosphere everyone truly appreciated.
As the Builders Hardware remains committed to honoring Belize’s diverse cultural heritage and ensuring future generations continue to celebrate, appreciate, and preserve the richness of Garifuna traditions.
