A slow-draining sink can be frustrating, but you can fix it yourself with a few simple steps. Follow this guide to get your sink flowing smoothly again.
What You’ll Need
- Rubber gloves
- Bucket
- Plunger
- Drain snake (or wire hanger)
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Boiling water
- Screwdriver (optional)
Step 1: Clear the Area
Remove any items from under the sink and put on your rubber gloves. Place a bucket beneath the drain to catch any water or debris.
Step 2: Check the Sink Stopper
- Remove the sink stopper (usually twist or pull out).
- Clean off any hair or debris caught around it.
- Replace the stopper and test the drain.
Step 3: Use a Plunger
- Fill the sink with enough water to cover the plunger's rubber cup.
- Place the plunger over the drain and create a seal.
- Push and pull the plunger vigorously for 30 seconds.
- Remove the plunger and see if the water drains faster.
Step 4: Use Baking Soda and Vinegar
- Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda into the drain.
- Follow with 1 cup of vinegar.
- Wait 10-15 minutes while the solution bubbles and breaks down clogs.
- Flush with boiling water.
Step 5: Use a Drain Snake or Wire Hanger
- Insert the drain snake or a straightened wire hanger into the drain.
- Twist and push gently to break apart or pull out clogs.
- Remove the tool and discard any debris.
- Flush the drain with hot water.
Step 6: Clean the P-Trap (if the clog persists)
- Use a screwdriver to loosen the P-trap (the curved pipe under the sink).
- Empty its contents into the bucket and clean out any blockages.
- Reassemble the P-trap and test the sink.
Prevention Tips
- Avoid pouring grease or food particles down the drain.
- Use a drain screen to catch debris.
- Regularly flush the drain with boiling water and baking soda.
With these steps, your sink should drain smoothly again. If the problem persists, consider consulting a plumber for more advanced issues.
