2 min

A slow-draining sink can be frustrating, but you can fix it yourself with a few simple steps. Follow this guide to get your sink flowing smoothly again.

What You’ll Need

  • Rubber gloves
  • Bucket
  • Plunger
  • Drain snake (or wire hanger)
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Boiling water
  • Screwdriver (optional)

Step 1: Clear the Area

Remove any items from under the sink and put on your rubber gloves. Place a bucket beneath the drain to catch any water or debris.

Step 2: Check the Sink Stopper

  1. Remove the sink stopper (usually twist or pull out).
  2. Clean off any hair or debris caught around it.
  3. Replace the stopper and test the drain.

Step 3: Use a Plunger

  1. Fill the sink with enough water to cover the plunger's rubber cup.
  2. Place the plunger over the drain and create a seal.
  3. Push and pull the plunger vigorously for 30 seconds.
  4. Remove the plunger and see if the water drains faster.

Step 4: Use Baking Soda and Vinegar

  1. Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda into the drain.
  2. Follow with 1 cup of vinegar.
  3. Wait 10-15 minutes while the solution bubbles and breaks down clogs.
  4. Flush with boiling water.

Step 5: Use a Drain Snake or Wire Hanger

  1. Insert the drain snake or a straightened wire hanger into the drain.
  2. Twist and push gently to break apart or pull out clogs.
  3. Remove the tool and discard any debris.
  4. Flush the drain with hot water.

Step 6: Clean the P-Trap (if the clog persists)

  1. Use a screwdriver to loosen the P-trap (the curved pipe under the sink).
  2. Empty its contents into the bucket and clean out any blockages.
  3. Reassemble the P-trap and test the sink.

Prevention Tips

  • Avoid pouring grease or food particles down the drain.
  • Use a drain screen to catch debris.
  • Regularly flush the drain with boiling water and baking soda.

With these steps, your sink should drain smoothly again. If the problem persists, consider consulting a plumber for more advanced issues.
